10 Must-Have Tech Tools for 2008

Anita Campbell, editor at SmallBizTrends.com recently came out with her 10 Must-Have Tech Tools for 2008. It’s a really good list of tech tools or apps that a business person will find useful. Below I have summarized her top ten and added my take on it. For her full article, click here –> Inc.com Technology News
To summarize, here’s her top ten list and my take on them:
1. iphone
Surely, one of the coolest phone out there. At $399 (price taken from the Apple Store with 2-year activation agreement with AT&T required), I don’t know if this is really for me. I can’t seem to justify the price especially since I can get a phone for free (of course with a term commitment) or for a lower price. I also haven’t outgrown my current cell phone yet and it’s good enough for my needs at the moment.
It might make you look cool when you have this and it might be a good conversational piece for professional networking as Anita suggested. I guess that’s the main benefit I can see for now (without digging further at the features). Would I buy it? I don’t think I will for now. I’ll probably would look into it once my cell phone term commitment expires.
2. Start page
Have used this since I don’t remember. I used to like myYahoo before. Now, I’m using more of iGoogle.
3. Business dashboard
Never heard of MyBizHomepage, I’ll surely would look into this and share my review in the next postings.
4. Wireless Broadband
I tried this kind of service before but was frustrated because of the slow speed. The speed I got was just a little better than dial up. Hopefully, speed has improved as more and more service providers are offering it and the technology matures.
5. Jacquie Lawson Greeting Card Subscription
It can add some extra personal touch to your business correspondence. At $10/yr subscription, this is really affordable. I just don’t know if this is effective co’z my personal tendency is to delete emails that contain flash or animation without really taking the time to look at them.
6. Microblogging
There is buzz right now regarding microblogging. It seems to be the new killer app. I just don’t know if there is a good business use to it. Anita gave some examples. I’ll probably look into it and see for myself if it will benefit my business.
7. Facebook and LinkedIn profiles
I like LinkedIn more than Facebook. Nice way of maintaining and building new contacts. Through LinkedIn, I was able to get in touch with old colleagues. I can say that this is really a nice way of building your network and your business.
8. Google Optimizer
I like this as well.
9. Voice recognition software
Well, let me look at VR software again and see if they have become better.
10. High quality headset
I’m actually looking for a good one at the moment. I’m leaning toward the Logitech Premium USB Headset 350. I’ve seen good reviews and the price is affordable.
Bonus tool: purse organizer
A good idea and something I would look into.
In addition, I would suggest the following,
1. Crossloop - we have covered this tool in previous posting. It’s really an easy to use desktop sharing tool. Very good when you’re out on the road and would like to access your desktop at home or in the office. Check this link for our previous post –> Crossloop Review
2. USB Flash Drive or a Portable Hard Drive - Prices are really really affordable now. There’s no reason not to get one if backing up your data especially when your on the road is really important.
Have a tech tool that you absolutely love and you can’t live without? Feel free to leave your comment and talk about it so we can start a discussion.
