Linux user since 1997, as it runs immune to the million Microsoft virus /Worms/bots/exploits! Linux and BSD run fast, and are more secure.

But, if what some mistakenly state, that Microsoft only has millions of virus/Worms/bots/exploits because it is the gorilla on the planet, they are not considering the facts.

Microsoft executives have testified under oath, and have filed in their SEC papers, that Linux held 17% of the user base, in 2005, and grew at a pace of 3% per annum. Since Vista, Linux growth has been reported by Microsoft executive officers as exceeding 5%!

So, if more than 25% of all users are running Linux, then 25% of all Virus/Worms/bots/exploits should be for Linux! But, what fails in that faulty logic is the fact that Linux is a more mature secure system than Microsoft.

Choose from 300 FREE LiveCDroms at http://livecdlist.com
I chose Mepis, Edubuntu, Fedora Core. Also, Vixta.org is a hoot!

FreeSBIE is FreeBSD using the Knoppix CLoop base to run Live!

The huge selection of free and open GNU software in each will astound!

Thanks Patrick. In fact, I might do that and come up with reviews on the advantages and disadvantages of their user-friendliness for ordinary people like me. You are right we should always keep an open mind on these things. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! :)

Glad to hear your enthusiasm, but don't repeat the mistake you made with windows. Be willing, and looking into other operating systems. I, much like you, made a transition a few years ago from XP to Ubuntu. From there I've tried Debian, Fedora, Mepis, Slackware, FreeBSD, LFS, PCLinuxOS, and gOS. Personally, I've decided to settle with Debian. The point is that you shouldn't lock yourself in again. Now that you made the initial transition to a *nix environment you are blessed with a gift of choice. I recommend you use it and find a distribution that most closely meets your needs. Ubuntu is certainly a great choice with a dedicated support group the likes of which I have seen nowhere else, but that's not to say that the next operating system you try won't be even better.

I was luckier than you, it appears. I didn't get my first computer until I was 55 years old. So it was only another 6 months or so before a friend gave me a copy of Knoppix 3.7 live CD. Now, 2 and a half years later, I have been Windows-free for 2 years. I have been through Xandros, Simply Mepis, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, and a few more. But for me, it is now Ubuntu and It will take something really special to lure me away.
