MemoKeys II: The Little Software Utility that Could …

In software, I look for simplicity. I look for tools that are simple, easy to use and most importantly, help me finish my work faster.

MemoKeys, I must say belongs to this category of tools. I use it to save time by encoding text that I repeatedly use in different documents across different application. For me, it has worked on all application that accepts text input (ex. word processor, email clients, web forms). The developer has even claimed that it has been tested on 40 different target applications.

How Does MemoKeys Save You Time?
MemoKeys is a handy little utility that allows you to create key combinations (or shortcuts) that you can program to write long text information. For example, I have programmed the key combination “F2 + A” as my shortcut to write my email address. Here, I used the term “programmed” which may sound “hard” to do but, in reality, “programming” the shortcut keys is as simple as clicking the F2 key, the “A” key and then writing the full text. That’s all you have to do and your shortcut key is ready.

In any document where you would like to write text (MS Word, Excel or OpenOffice etc.), you would just press your shortcut keys and the text will be written. Sky is the limit as to what type of text information you would want to create a shortcut key on. You can use it on repeated code snippets, home address, telephone numbers, password, email signature, favorites, etc. Obviously, the more you repeatedly use the same line of text information, the more you should create a shortcut key for it.

Free Version or Paid?
I only use the free version of MemoKeys, MemoKeys II Lite Edition 2.3. The free version is fine for my need. There is a PRO version but I don’t recommend it as I haven’t used it personally. Also, the website of the developer seems to be down the last time I checked it. I don’t think you would want to pay for anything if support may not be available when you need it.

In summary, I love the simplicity of this software. The only drawback I can find is its age although it works fine on my Windows Vista machine. It seems the developer hasn’t updated it since 2003. Also, it only works on Windows.

Download it today and see if it suits your needs.
