Crossloop is indeed “One of the Best Things that Ever Happened Online” specially in providing help and assistance. I recently got a call from a lawyer friend who eventually turned to blogging for his past time. Being a lawyer, he is not very familiar with the online tools that a blogger uses and he is so interested to learn more about it. He is quite confused on how to be able to put in html/javascript tags on the blog that he is writing on and would like me to go to his office and guide him through.

I have always been on the lookout for an IM messenger aside from Gaim or Pidgin that could host multiple IM providers such as Yahoo, ICQ, AIM & IRC. In my search for the right messenger who could do this, I chanced upon Trillian by Cerulean Studios. It s a fully featured, stand-alone, skinnable chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC. It provides capabilities not possible with original network clients, while supporting standard features such as audio chat, file transfers, group chats, chat rooms, buddy icons, multiple simultaneous connections to the same network, server-side contact importing, typing notification, direct connection (AIM), proxy support, encrypted messaging (AIM/ICQ), SMS support, and privacy settings.

Trillian provides unique functionality such as contact message history, a powerful skinning language, tabbed messaging, global status changes (set all networks away at once), Instant Lookup (automatic Wikipedia integration), contact alerts, an advanced automation system to trigger events based on anything happening in the client, docking, hundreds of emoticons, emotisounds, shell extensions for file transfers, and systray notifications.
Trillian however comes in two flavors; the first is the Basic and the Pro. Trillian Basic is the free version while the Pro version comes with a fee. With Trillian 3.1 version there are new features and benefits that are both available both in the free and the paid versions. Among them are Flexibility one could now use multiple identities using the new Identities and Connection Manager; Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) - Windows users with UPnP enabled routers will benefit from vastly improved file transfer success rates; Faster and Smaller - Trillian worked hard to speed up their messenger even more, there have been tremendous improvements in start-up times, icon rendering speeds and more.

I’ve always been anticipating every major release of Dimdim. In my view, Dimdim is one of the coolest open source project around. Its promise of a rich media collaboration for all is something I’d really love to see happen. Dimdim is the world’s free open source web meeting company whose mission is to become the leading provider of open source web meeting software. Since launch, it has been used in 165 countries by over 350,000 people.

I was excited when I learned that there was a book that just came out on AsteriskNow. As far as I know, this AsteriskNow book is the only one available for the subject matter. For those who may not know, AsteriskNow is an open-source software appliance from Digium. It’s an easy to install, customized Linux distribution that includes Asterisk (the leading open-source telephony engine and tool kit), the AsteriskGUI, and all the other software needed for an Asterisk telephony system. The improvement on the original Asterisk release is that it packaged everything one needs allowing for a quicker and easier way of deploying Asterisk. Surely, it’s a great step towards making Asterisk within reach of small businesses who may not have the technical capabilities necessary in making Asterisk run in their enterprise.

It had been quite a while since I last wrote an article here after my terrible accident. Anyway, as I was recuperating from my motorcycle crash, I was able to spend more time watching videos using my PC and this prompted me to check out several different video files from different sources. Some video files that I happen to encounter are not playable to the built-in video players that I have on my computer. That prompted me to check out for some available free-ware and open source video player and this is the time that I found Miro.

Miro is a one of a kind video solution for one who would like to play varied types of video files whether from the internet or videos that were created from elsewhere. I have tested playing various files with Miro and all videos played well. Not only that, the resolution of the videos that I played with Miro were all enhanced thus giving the viewer a much better resolutions for viewing pleasures.

What is Open Source? If you don’t know then probably it has become so ubiquitous that you never pay attention to the term anymore. You’re probably using open source software and yet you don’t know it. Open source projects revolutionized the IT industry and business in general and it promise to do more in the near and the far future. At the backend of the Internet, you’ll find open source projects powering its infrastructure. From operating system like Linux, and blogging software like WordPress to online forum software like phpBB. Behind the scene, countless other small and yet important softwares are being churned out by the energetic and passionate members of the community. In many ways, the internet revolution we are seeing right now is directly caused by members of the community. Open Source, by also being free (in most cases) or low cost has made technology available to more people.

There was this story that there were a group of individuals scattered all across the globe who constantly kept in touch with each other using different communication mediums and tools. They realized that keeping up with these communication tools are quite expensive and unreliable. What they thought of was that there was an opportunity with the predicament that they encountered and came up with a plan to create an integrated, easy-to-use communication and collaboration free service tool to address needs of people who were geographically dispersed but have a constant need for communications and collaborations.

It is quite difficult to get into business when we are trying to communicate with major languages being used now in the West. Hard to accept but not all who are into business are capable of speaking the Universal Language which is the English language. That is why many businesses who have clients from the other parts of the Globe wherein a different language is being used needs a translator to help them in understanding languages not commonly shared by everyone.

Right now, a new technology had arised. This is Promt 7.8 - an online translation tool that would make one easily translate phrases and words to and from various major languages from the West. Whether it be French, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Russian to English. It is a major assistance to most of us who are into business. Right now, most meetings are being done online and some are through chat or private messaging through chat conferences. This tool is a very usable software that could easily assist anyone who would be talking to another businessman from another part of the Globe. Language would no longer be a barrier when it comes to that.

Open Office is the Open Source counterpart of Sun to Microsoft’s MS Office. Open Office is multi-lingual & multi-platform that is compatible with all major office suites with whatever Operating System that suits one’s needs. It has all the necessary components in an office suite that any user could get hold of. It has all the major components of MS Office and more.

It has its own equivalent for all major office applications in MS Office. It has Writer while there is MS Word, Impress while there is MS PowerPoint, Calc and/or Math while there is MS Excel and there are still lots of new and impressive applications no longer built-in to an MS Office suite.
